Illinois Medical Spa Regulations Overview
In Illinois, botulinum toxin (Botox, Xeomin, Dysport) and dermal fillers are classified as prescription medical devices. Under Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR) standards, administering an injectable is considered the practice of medicine.
Licensed Injector Roles Breakdown
- Physicians (MD / DO): Fully licensed to independently diagnose, prescribe, perform injections, and oversee medical spas as Medical Directors.
- Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRN / NP): Licensed nurse practitioners with Full Practice Authority (FPA) can independently evaluate patients, prescribe neurotoxins, and administer injections. APRNs without FPA practice under a formal collaborative agreement with a licensed physician.
- Registered Nurses (RN) & Physician Assistants (PA): Can administer Botox injections under standing delegation orders after an initial in-person or telehealth examination by an MD, DO, or APRN.
- Estheticians & Cosmetologists: Strictly prohibited under Illinois law from administering Botox, fillers, or piercing the living layers of skin, regardless of certificate training.
