Clinical Perspective · Express Med Spa Frankfort

A simple rule of thumb we share with our Frankfort patients is: Botox is for expression lines that move, while dermal filler is for volume that has been lost. If you smile or frown and see a wrinkle, that is a job for Botox. If you look in the mirror at rest and see hollow under-eyes, deflated cheeks, or thinning lips, that requires dermal filler.

Neuromodulators Relax Muscles; Fillers Plump Volume

The difference between Botox and dermal fillers comes down to their mechanism of action. Botox (and Xeomin/Dysport) is a neuromodulator that temporarily blocks nerve signals to specific facial muscles, allowing the overlying skin to smooth out. It adds zero physical volume. Dermal fillers, on the other hand, are sterile, pliable gels made of synthetic Hyaluronic Acid (HA)—a moisture-binding sugar molecule naturally found in human skin. Fillers physically occupy space beneath the skin to restore deflated tissue, enhance contours, and smooth deep static folds.

Treatment Areas: Upper Face vs. Lower Face & Cheeks

Because of their distinct mechanisms, the two treatments target different zones of the face. Botox is primarily utilized in the upper face: forehead lines, frown lines (“11s”), and crow’s feet around the eyes (as well as specialized zones like masseters for jaw slimming). Dermal fillers are predominantly used in the mid and lower face: restoring cheek volume, filling deep nasolabial folds (smile lines), softening marionette lines, defining the jawline, and plumping thinning lips.

Longevity and Pricing Differences

Neuromodulators like Botox and Xeomin are priced by the unit ($10.95 to $12.95 per unit at Express Med Spa Frankfort) and typically last 3 to 4 months. Dermal fillers are priced by the syringe (usually 1 mL, averaging $600 to $800+ in the Frankfort market) and last significantly longer—typically 6 to 18 months depending on the product thickness and treatment area. Combining both treatments in a personalized session is commonly called a “liquid facelift.”

Frequently Asked Questions: Botox vs. Dermal Fillers in Frankfort, IL

Can I get Botox and dermal fillers at the same appointment?

Yes. Combining Botox in the upper face with filler in the mid-to-lower face is a standard, highly effective aesthetic protocol that provides balanced, harmonious rejuvenation in a single visit.

Can dermal fillers be reversed if I do not like the result?

Hyaluronic acid dermal fillers (such as Versa, Juvederm, or Restylane) can be dissolved quickly and safely using an injectable enzyme called hyaluronidase. Botox, however, cannot be dissolved—its effects wear off gradually over 3 to 4 months.

Does Botox or filler hurt more?

Both are very well tolerated. Botox uses tiny 31G needles with a 1-second pinch. Dermal fillers are injected deeper, but modern fillers are pre-mixed with lidocaine (a local anesthetic) that numbs the area as the gel is placed.

Which treatment is better for smile lines around the mouth?

Deep nasolabial folds running from the nose to the mouth corners are usually caused by volume loss in the cheeks, making dermal filler the primary treatment rather than Botox.
