How Botox Works
The short version: Botox briefly interrupts the signal between a nerve and a muscle, so the muscle relaxes and stops creasing the skin above it. Here’s what that means in practice.

The mechanism, in plain terms
To move a muscle, a nerve releases a chemical messenger that tells the muscle to contract. Botulinum toxin — the active ingredient in Botox — temporarily blocks the release of that messenger at the specific spot where it’s injected. The treated muscle can’t fully contract, so it relaxes. When that muscle is one that repeatedly folds the skin (for example, the muscles that pull your brows together), relaxing it softens the line that movement creates.

Dynamic lines versus static lines
Botox targets dynamic lines — the ones that appear when you make an expression. Because it works on movement, it’s most effective on lines caused by muscle activity, such as frown lines, forehead lines, and crow’s feet. Lines that are visible even when your face is completely at rest (staticlines, often from collagen loss or sun damage) may soften somewhat but are a different problem, and providers sometimes address them with other treatments entirely.
Why the effect is temporary
The block isn’t permanent. Over the following months the nerve-to-muscle communication gradually recovers, movement returns, and the lines reappear. That’s why maintenance treatments are spaced out over the year rather than done once. For most people a treatment lasts about three to four months, though this varies with the dose, the area, and individual factors.

What Botox does not do
Botox relaxes muscle; it does not add volume. It won’t plump lips or cheeks, fill a deep fold, or repair skin texture and sun damage — those are the jobs of dermal fillers or resurfacing treatments, which work in a completely different way. Understanding this distinction is the difference between a natural result and a disappointing one, and it’s a good question to raise at your consultation.
